2011 North Sumatra Jazz Festival – “Discover Indonesia Experience”

After the “Road to Festival event” on the past May 20, finally the North Sumatra Jazz Festival 2011 held right as it had been planned on July 1 & 2, 2011 at Danau Toba International Hotel Convention Center. This festival brought up several great Indonesian’s jazz musicians such as Idang Rasjidi collaborated with KSP – a pop-jazz band that had been off-stage for about 13 years before realeased their third album in the end of 2010, Donny Suhendra with Donny Suhendra Project, Yovie Widianto Fusion, Ligro, Sruti Respati & Friends, Emerald BEX, Erucakra Mahameru & C-Man, Suhu Band – a jazz-malay band from Malaysia, and other local jazz performer such as Ethno Big Band, Progressive Band, and Kolegium Musikum.

This festival itself can be said successfully achieved the public interest during its two days. The audiences seems really entertained and enjoyed by the great performance of all jazz musicians that performed. They even sang along with before gave their big applause to all performers. A big applause also should be given to the festival founder – Erucakra Mahameru, Gideon Momongan, and Indrawan Ibonk and all organizer team who had been worked so hard from the first time in organized, announced, promoted through the “Road to Festival event”, invited the great jazz musicians, and finally made the festival happened successfully.

And for the last, hopefully this festival will be a symbol of a ressurection of jazz era in northern Sumatra which will held again next year and every year after this first, and also a first step to become one of the jazz festival agenda in Indonesia as the Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival had did in the future.

Sruti Respati & Friends on NSJF 2011 day #1 – Sruti Respati prefers to be called a sinden (a gamelan orchestra singer) rather than a vocalist. Its not that she regards one profession superior to the other, but believes the term sinden better reflects her Javanese character. Born in Surakarta, also known as Solo, in 1980, Sruti was brought up in a family steeped in Javanese traditional arts. Her father Sri Djoko Rahardjo and grandpa Ki Njoto Tja-rito were famous dalang wayang kulit Geather puppet show players) in Solo, while her mother Sri Maryati was a Javanese dancer. In her early musical explorations, Sruti was more engaged in Javanese langgani and keroncong, and later in contemporary and jazz music. Sruti is able to combine Javanese cengkok (pitch or key changes) with modem musics vocal techniques. She manages to give the sinden vocal color to any musical genre, especially jazz. Determined to highlight the Javanese character of the songs she presents, Sruti is in fact obsessed with bringing Javanese art to the world stage.
